Foliage timing questions spike every September, and most answers are guesses. This is what years of shooting the region says.
The short version
- First week of October: color starts on the high ground between the lakes
- October 10–25: the reliable peak window for the core region
- Lake effect: the shorelines run 5–10 days behind the hilltops — the lakes hold warmth
Book accommodation early: foliage weekends (Oct 10–25) book out 4–6 weeks in advance.
Where to go first
- Keuka Lake overlook at Bluff Point — the bend in the Y-shaped lake with color on both arms
- The Burdett pull-off on Route 14 — unobstructed over Seneca with vineyard foreground
- Taughannock rim trail — the falls framed in color, morning mist most days
- Hammondsport village — late-season, when the vineyard rows turn gold
Reading the season
A warm, wet September pushes peak later; an early cold snap accelerates it. Watch the sugar maples on the hilltops — when they turn, you have about ten days.
The vineyards themselves are the underrated subject. Vine rows turn a uniform gold in late October, after leaf-peeping traffic has mostly gone home.
