Three names in Conesus’s wine records
O-Neh-Da, Barry and Eagle Crest appear in different kinds of Conesus wine paperwork. The dated entries give us a research trail without proving an unbroken chain of ownership.
The 1960 federal winery list puts O-Neh-Da Vineyard at Conesus, with registry number 524 and permit 2-W-28. A separately inspected 1964 edition repeats that name, place and pair of identifiers. These are dated entries in an administrative record, not production totals or a list of the people who worked there. Bonded Wineries and Bonded Wine Cellars Authorized to Operate, July 1, 1960; Bonded Wineries and Bonded Wine Cellars Authorized to Operate, July 1, 1964.
An industry document adds a different name. The annual report labeled 1978, preserved in the Wine Growers Association’s 1980 petition file, lists The Barry Wine Company at Conesus. Barry and O-Neh-Da appear underneath as names in its member panel. Finger Lakes Wine Growers Association viticultural-area petition, with annual-report attachment.
The 1988 ATF list gives Eagle Crest Vineyards at Conesus, with the identifier BW-NY-686. Its cover carries the code 11/88. A federal list and an industry member panel were doing different jobs; their names should not be treated as interchangeable labels. Bonded Wineries and Bonded Wine Cellars Authorized to Operate, 1988 edition.
Those entries leave a worthwhile story to investigate. Deeds, corporate papers, brand records and correspondence could explain the connections. Until they are compared, the dates do not prove uninterrupted ownership or operation, and the paperwork cannot supply the missing histories of growers and winery workers.
Sources & research notes
Review status: Developing history. Human editorial review is pending.
Written and source-checked with AI assistance under an owner-authorized editorial process. This is not a personal review by Riley or an independent historian. Sources and unresolved questions are listed below; corrections are welcome.
- What the records establish
- Visually inspected 1960 and 1964 rows name O-Neh-Da at Conesus; the report labeled 1978 names Barry with O-Neh-Da; the 1988 edition names Eagle Crest at Conesus. The source types and dates remain distinct.
- What remains uncertain
- Ownership, corporate, parcel, brand and operational continuity are not established. The lists do not identify every grower, worker or customer. Edition dates and identifiers were checked against the page images; no exact issuance day is inferred from the 1988 cover’s 11/88 code.
- What we are researching next
- Reconcile the saved source-date and row-number mismatches, then trace dated deeds, corporate filings, brand transfers and company correspondence. Compare staff and grape-purchase records before making claims about labor, growers or sacramental-wine customers.
