A failed lock stood between the two lakes
At the close of the 1840 season, the commissioners described a lock that had to be rebuilt before Crooked Lake Canal navigation could resume.
One lock could keep the connection closed. In January 1841, the Canal Commissioners reported that the lower Crooked Lake Canal lock—the one connecting navigation with Seneca Lake—had barely lasted to the previous season’s end. Its upper frame had failed. Annual Report of the Canal Commissioners, New York Assembly No. 72.
They did not describe the entire structure as lost. The timber crib-work below the low-water line appeared substantial and unchanged. Their plan was to remove the failed frame and rebuild above it with crib-work like the lower part. Annual Report of the Canal Commissioners, New York Assembly No. 72.
The intended deadline was the following April. Until the lock was rebuilt, the report said, navigation could not open again. The date records a plan made in January, not a completion certificate. Annual Report of the Canal Commissioners, New York Assembly No. 72.
The report counted 28 locks along the eight-mile route. Its description brings the canal down from a line joining two lakes to a chain of structures that had to work. This particular repair still needs its contract, workers and completion record. Annual Report of the Canal Commissioners, New York Assembly No. 72.
