Putting bends back into Honeoye Inlet
Two dated plans let us follow Honeoye’s inlet work from a proposed realignment to a reported 2017 completion—without mistaking a design goal for a measured result.
The restoration called for digging, not simply leaving the inlet alone. A December 2016 draft plan describes work being planned that May:replace a straightened reach of Honeoye Inlet with a winding channel and plug ditches that drained the neighboring ground. The 2016 draft plan.
A later habitat plan says the project began in 2016 and finished in 2017. It describes roughly 3,500 feet of new meandering channel, the old straight section disconnected and partly filled, and smaller ponds and ditch plugs spreading water across the low ground. An old farm lane was raised to help form a marsh. DEC’s 2019 habitat plan.
The figures in the two plans describe different things. The draft proposed realigning about 2,700 feet of existing inlet; the later account describes 3,500 feet of new channel. That is not enough to calculate an 800-foot expansion or a change order. The as-built survey has not been examined. The 2016 draft plan; DEC’s 2019 habitat plan.
Nor is a completed channel the same as a measured lake-wide improvement. The 2019 plan describes wetland-use monitoring then as informal and opportunistic. Its account gives us a construction history and intended functions, not a percentage reduction in all the sediment or nutrients entering Honeoye Lake. DEC’s 2019 habitat plan.

- What the records establish
- The draft records proposed work, and the later plan reports 2016–2017 construction and describes its components. Their measurements and documentary roles remain separate.
- What remains uncertain
- As-built surveys, contractor/worker records, construction closeout and quantitative outcome monitoring remain uninspected. No exact reconstruction of an original channel, verified nutrient-reduction percentage, current habitat condition or present visitor guidance is established.
- What we are researching next
- Locate the project’s as-built plans, completion documents and before/after monitoring methods. Compare published percentage claims with their denominators, periods and actual measurements before using them.
