The causeway mattered to Otisco’s fish count
A 2006 walleye survey came with a warning: where the fish were sampled changed what the numbers could mean.
In fall 2006, DEC used night electrofishing to check Otisco Lake’s walleye stocking. Its annual report records 171 young-of-year fish and 16 yearlings. Every walleye caught in that assessment was south of the causeway. DEC’s 2006/2007 fisheries report.
The catch was useful, but it did not make a fair comparison with every earlier survey. DEC said relatively little past work had been done south of the causeway. Comparing those young-fish catch rates directly with the 1990s would be inappropriate. DEC’s 2006/2007 fisheries report.
The report also separated the fish actually caught from estimates made with formulas: 5,895 young-of-year walleye and 456 yearlings south of the causeway. Those figures were estimates for that part of the lake, not thousands of fish individually counted. DEC’s 2006/2007 fisheries report.
Even those estimates came with a limit. DEC did not know how many fish had already moved through the causeway into the main lake, so it considered both estimates probably low. DEC’s 2006/2007 fisheries report.

- What the records establish
- The inspected annual-report passage records the 2006 assessment, its catches and its explicit limits. It supports an account of how DEC interpreted that survey, not an independently verified population reconstruction.
- What remains uncertain
- The original catch sheets, coverage map and calculations have not been inspected. This historical summary does not establish today’s walleye numbers, fishing conditions or stocking program.
- What we are researching next
- Retrieve the field records and dated survey coverage before comparing this assessment with earlier or later work. Keep catches, estimated populations and stocking totals separate.
